Guidelines for Mentoring New Basketball Officials

This is a guideline for the mentoring of inexperienced basketball officials.  The intention of this guideline is not to replace our official’s manual but to add clarification to it when training an official.

1)            Mechanics: Start with the basics--positioning

a) Pre-game
b) Jump Ball
c) Time Outs and intermission
d) Foul Reporting
e) Rotations and switching
f) Post game positioning:  Leave the court together immediately.

It is my opinion that repetition is one of the keys to anyone doing a good job.  Show the inexperienced official the proper mechanics and positioning techniques and then let him do it over and over again until it becomes useable.

2)            Live ball play:

a) Whistle blowing
b) What to look for:  primary coverage area, violations, fouls
c) On ball coverage
d) Off ball coverage
e) Throw-in administration
f) Free Throw Administration
g) Communication - With Coaches, Players and most importantly your fellow officials.

3)            Presentation, Pre-game and Post-Game:

a) The uniform.  How is it to be worn.  Set an example.  Facial hair (groomed properly)
b) Pre-Game:  Encourage prompt arrival at site.
c) Post-Game: Providing feedback to partners.  Discuss with them the peer rating system and how it works.  No discussion regarding events of the game outside of the officials dressing area (unless to alert local director or state office)

4)            Disqualification: All officials are to record information and all should be willing to communicate                   disqualification to high school league and local director ( if on sub-varsity level ).
